CLABE

CLABE (Clave Bancaria Estandarizada) is the 18-digit standardized number that identifies one specific account at one specific bank in Mexico. Banco de México introduced it in 2004 so every regulated bank could route transfers using the same format, instead of each institution’s own numbering scheme. The 18 digits break down into 3 for the bank, 3 for the branch, 11 for the account, and a final check digit that flags many typos before a transfer goes through. A CLABE is what SPEI uses to route a transfer to the right account, and it also identifies the destination for direct debit and payroll deposits. It stays tied to the account even if the debit card linked to it expires or gets replaced.
